2D Foundations - Building Blocks of Art
2D Foundations builds essential drawing and painting skills that help artists grow confidence and clarity in their work. In this workshop, students will explore key concepts including shape and form, light and shadow, perspective, color theory, and composition through hands-on projects and guided instruction.
This class provides a strong technical base while encouraging creative thinking and personal style. By the end of the workshop, students will have the tools and understanding needed to develop their ideas and confidently move into more advanced or specialized 2D art courses.

Outside the Studio: Painting at Marymoor
Take your painting outside the studio and into the real world in this 2-day plein air painting workshop. You’ll head to Marymoor Park to paint directly from observation, learning how artists capture light, color, and atmosphere in natural settings.
Inspired by Impressionist painters, you’ll explore watercolor landscape techniques while working outdoors—focusing on composition, movement, and painting what you see in the moment. This workshop is all about slowing down, experimenting, and learning to respond creatively to your surroundings. Drop-off and pick-up will take place at Redmond Art Works, with guided instruction and plenty of fresh air and inspiration along the way.

Watercolor Painting Unleashed

Illustrating Anime Characters
Step into the world of anime illustration and bring your own characters to life in this hands-on drawing workshop for aspiring artists. Students will learn the fundamentals of anime-style art, including how to sketch the basic figure, build expressive faces, and create dynamic poses. We’ll explore how to ink and stylize drawings using clean linework, exaggerated features, and design elements that define the anime aesthetic.

Drawing the Human Figure
Drawing people can be one of the most challenging—and rewarding—skills an artist can learn. In this figure drawing workshop, teens will explore how the human body moves, bends, and holds expression through gesture drawing, proportion, and portrait studies. We’ll break down anatomy in a clear, approachable way so students can better understand how figures are built and how to draw them with confidence.
Using reference images, poseable figures, and live observation (including ourselves!), students will practice capturing movement, balance, and personality in their drawings. By the end of the workshop, each student will take home a sketchbook filled with studies, ideas, and inspiration to keep developing their figure drawing skills long after class ends.

Zany Cartoon Character Studio
Bring your imagination to life in this playful cartooning workshop focused on bold characters and expressive storytelling. Students will learn how to distort, exaggerate, and embellish their drawings to create zany cartoon characters full of action, drama, and humor. We’ll explore how posture, facial expression, and movement help characters tell a story or make a statement—no words required.
Cartoonists will practice expression drawing, strong line quality, and building characters from both imagination and real-life observation. We’ll also experiment with space, scale, and composition to make images pop off the page. Students will work with a variety of materials including pencil, paper, markers, ink, and watercolor, and leave with a collection of dynamic characters and ideas ready for comics, stories, or standalone artwork.

Cardboard Creature Creation
Create creatures straight out of your imagination in this energetic, hands-on art workshop! Working in 2D, students will draw and paint fantastic creatures bursting with personality, color, and attitude. Artists can choose a cartoon or more realistic style as they explore exaggeration, distortion, and expressive details to bring their ideas to life.
We’ll experiment with drawing, painting, and mixed-media techniques—stretching forms, cutting and pasting, and building bold designs on paper and cardboard. The workshop culminates in a spectacular stand-up creature character, giving students a finished piece they can display proudly and a deeper confidence in creative storytelling through art.
